First Five Day Week! September 13th-17th

Dear First Grade Families,

We made it through our first five day week!

We have continued getting to know one another and building our classroom community.  One way we building our classroom community is by having a daily morning meeting.  Morning meeting has four components:  a greeting, a share, an activity, and reading a morning message.  This is a great time for students to learn each other's names, find out more about each other's likes/dislikes, and have fun together.  We are working on strategies for what to do when you don't remember someone's name.  We are asking, "What is your name?" and then taking a look at their eyes and hair and trying to remember their names.  For share, we have done a lot of this or that questions, such as apples or bananas, cats or dogs, sleep in or wake up early.  For this week's activity, we did a movement activity (also called an energizer) called "Alive, Awake, Alert, Enthusiastic!"

Each week, we read a poem and read it each day to improve our reading fluency.  This week's poem was called "Apples, Apples."  We read the poem each day and then on Fridays, we add it to our poetry binders.  Students have the option to read their poetry binders during reading workshop.

In addition to all of our regular lessons, we did some assessments this week to get a baseline of students' writing and math skills.  We talked about their job and my job during an assessment.  We discussed how it is important to try your best and how it's okay not to know everything!

This week in Reading...
-We learned that readers get stronger by reading more and more! We added a tool to our reading bin called a "reading mat."  The reading mat helps students make a plan for their reading and helps build stamina! The next day, we added post it notes to help us keep track of how many books we read.  The next day, we looked at how many books we read the day before and set a goal to read even more!
-In phonics, we are working on reading and writing words with the short a sound.  Students also have a phonics poem in their poetry binders to work on fluency and decoding skills.

This week in Writing...
-We learned how to plan our stories by touching and telling the story on each page.  This helps students make sure that their stories have a beginning, middle, and end.  Students are all at different stages in their writing, so we are working on helping all students feel comfortable and confident.  ALL students are writers and ALL students have a story to tell! Writing is one of the hardest things we ask first graders to do.... We took a writing assessment this week and it will be amazing to compare their September writing assessment with their May/June writing assessment.  The growth is amazing!

This week in Math...
-We practiced skip counting by 1s and 5s.
-We practiced making estimates and counting larger collections.
-We had time to explore our math tool kits and practice rolling dice the "first grade way" :) Shake, shake, drop!
-We played Penny Dice.
-We took our Math Benchmark.

For Theme Work, we started learning about apples.
-We wrote a list of things we know/think we know about apples.
-We read The Seasons of Arnold's Apple Tree and drew a picture of an apple tree during each season.
-We made a diagram of an apple tree.
-Next week we will learn about the parts of an apple and the life cycle of an apple.
-We also read the book Do Unto Otters and talked about how we should treat people the way we want to be treated.  We made our classroom rules.

Housekeeping...
-Please send your child to school each day with a clean mask! It is also VERY helpful to have spare masks in your child's backpack in the event that their mask gets wet, broken, lost, or dirty.
-There will be a virtual LIVE open house next week.  Be looking for more information from Ms. Gamache.  This is a first for me, so it will be an adventure! The Open House will take place via a Google Meet link.

I hope you all have a great weekend! As always, please feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns.  The best way to reach me is via email at kgreene@kitteryschools.com.

Second Week of School! September 7th - September 10th

Dear First Grade Families,

Whew! We had a great second week of school.  It was a 4-day week, but we were busy practicing our classroom routines, getting to know each other, and also starting in on our academic blocks.  Students are doing such a great job building their independence.  Most students are able to do all the steps of the unpacking process without reminders! They have also started doing "morning work."  Morning work is just a short, review activity to help them settle into the school day.  Some students are eating breakfast, so they might not have a chance to complete each task, but that's okay! We started Reading Workshop, Writing Workshop, and our Everyday Math Lessons.  The pace and workload of first grade is a big jump from Kindergarten, but everyone is doing great!

In Writing...

-We learned that the best stories come from the heart.  Students completed a "heart map" with different people, places, and things that are special to them.  These will be stored in their writing folders to help them when they need an idea for a story.

-We learned the steps to writing a story! The steps are:  think about something that has happened to you, draw the pictures, and write the words.

-We also learned that "When you're done, you've just begun!" When you're "done" with a story, you can .... add to the pictures, add to the words, or start a new story.  We are building up our stamina for writing workshop.

-On Friday, we practiced stretching words to write them.  We learned that writers say a word slowly, write the first sound, say the word again, and write the next sound.... and you keep on going until you don't hear anymore sounds! Right now, I am praising ANY attempts students make at stretching unknown words.  First graders use "inventive" spelling and it might not always be the conventional way to spell a word, but they are learning! As they know more sounds, they will be able to spell words more accurately!

In Reading...

We learned about building "good habits" as readers.

-We got our book bins!

-We learned to take a "sneak peek" at the beginning of the story.  Look at the cover, look at the pictures, and get your brain ready to read!

-We learned that readers "do something at the end."  Readers look at their favorite part, retell the story, or reread the story.

-We spent some time exploring our magnetic letter sets.  Students built their names, sorted letters by color, and built lots of "big words" for me to read.  We will use these a lot throughout the year for word work!

-We also added a poem to our poetry binders.

-On Friday, we read a Scholastic News about classroom community.

In Math...

We began using the number line to count by 1s, 5s, and 10s.  We are doing "whisper and shout" counting where you whisper four numbers and shout the fifth number.  We also practicing making estimates or "good guesses" and then counting to check our estimates.  We learned a game called Monster Squeeze.  We also were very excited to use our whiteboards! We practiced writing numbers.

In Social Studies...

This week we talked about our "Hopes and Dreams" for first grade.  We talked about what we'd like to learn or get better at in first grade.  Each student chose a "Hope or Dream" and did a writing project.  These will hang in our classroom all year.  We will use our Hopes and Dreams to help us develop our classroom rules/agreements.  How can we help everyone reach their hopes and dreams? Next week, we will brainstorm ideas for classroom rules and sign a classroom agreement.

Housekeeping notes..

-Thank you for returning the paperwork to the office and nurse!

-Please continue to check your child's red folder each day and send it to school! We are on a roll with this so far!

-Please send your child with a small snack and water bottle each day! I will do my very best to make sure water bottles make it home, but sometimes, students leave in a hurry for the bus and they are left behind.  PLEASE be sure that water bottles are labeled with your child's name! I usually label the bottom or a piece of stainless steel on my daughter's water bottle.

-Speaking of labeling.... as the weather gets colder, please label your child's sweatshirts and jackets.  I usually write my daughter's name on the tag of her sweatshirts!

-Please be sure that your child comes to school each day with a CLEAN mask that fits their face.  It is also a good idea to have spares in their backpack in the event that your child's mask gets dirty, wet, or lost.  It is also a good idea to send in a change of clothes in case your child has an accident or spill that requires them to change clothes.  The school nurse DOES NOT have spare clothes in her office.  If you send them in a bag, I will put them on top of your child's cubby.

Please feel free to reach out if you have any questions or concerns.  The best way to reach me is via email at kgreene@kitteryschools.com.

I hope you all have a great weekend!!

First Week of School!

Dear First Grade Families,

We had a great first week of school! We spent the week getting to know each other, learning about first grade, and practicing our routines.  Students seem to be enjoying their desks, wobble stools, and making new friends! We have a really great class and I'm excited for all of the fun things to come!

Thank you for all of the classroom supplies! We have lots of crayons, glue sticks, wipes, markers, and pencils to get us through the year! You all have been doing a great job sending in the red folders each day, too! I am doing my best to make sure that all red folders, water bottles, and lunch boxes make it home, but occasionally they are forgotten and will have a "sleepover" at school!

Here are some pictures from the first week of school! I am still working on getting all students first day photos (oops!)

If you do not see your child's first day photo, I am going to take some this week! The first day and week are super busy and it's hard to get through all the pictures!

We also made some self portraits (with masks!) Can you spot your child?

We read the story Chrysanthemum and did some activities with our names!

We read the story Wemberly Worried.  Wemberly is a mouse with a LOT of worries.  After reading the story, we made a list of things Wemberly worries about.  We did a writing activity where we wrote something Wemberly worried about and something we worried about.  Here are some pictures of our work!

We did a fun "math about me" page.

Next week, we will continue getting to know each other.  We will discuss what we hope to learn or get better at in first grade and write about "Hopes and Dreams" for first grade.  We will then discuss how we can help everyone achieve their "Hopes and Dreams" by making classroom agreements (or rules) to follow.  We will also get started with Reading Workshop, Writing Workshop, and our Everyday Math lessons! We will be working on building up our stamina and independence!

Some reminders...
  • I sent a Scholastic Book Order home on Thursday.  If you'd like to order, you can order online using our class code HNCFV.  It is due by September 10th.
  • Please send your child to school each day with a snack (nut free!!) and a non-spill water bottle.
  • Please make sure that your child has a clean mask that fits their face each day! It is also a great idea to have a couple of extra masks in your child's backpack in the event that they get lost (it happens!), wet, or dirty!
Please bookmark the blog and check for semi-regular updates! I will try to update every week, but sometimes it gets busy and I might miss a week or two or three!

If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to email me at anytime kgreene@kitteryschools.com.
